| I had a very similar problem for XP home edition - This is how i fixed it. Used the Windows XP boot disks (created using another computer after downloading this link: ) | http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=E8FE6868-6E4F-471C-B455-BD5AFEE126D8 Ran the boot disks and selected “R” for repair. Once I had ensured that the repair console was looking at the directory with XP installed on it (mine defaulted to the correct one anyway) I ran “chkdsk /r” to repair the drive.
This stopped prematurely as it was looking for a file called “autochk.exe” which windows could not find, maybe because it was corrupted?? Anyway I searched using another pc for the file on google and found a link. I downloaded it and put it on a floppy. I went back to the problem pc and ran “chkdsk /r” again and this time selected the floppy drive when prompted for the autochk file. A few hours later the console said one or more errors were detected and fixed, I rebooted and all was fixed! |
